For longer coats, we have seen too many dogs with their coat matted down to their skin. What is happening is that by not getting regular groomings, the tangles become worse and worse. Then the dog has to be shaved down to where the matting stops. We sometimes see that when the coat is shaved, a “pelt” is the result – kind of like shearing a sheep! Dogs groomed have revealed ticks that have been there and have caused infections and we have found fleas – even if the dog is on flea control medicine. We have the same capsules that the doctors have that get rid of the fleas and we have small bottles of flea spray to spray their beds, the car seat, and anywhere else the dog sleeps to kill the fleas which may still be there. At the daycare, every morning, the beds get sprayed down with the same spray. The best thing you can do for your dog is bring them in to be groomed. 

Riley: Even though I don’t like baths and will jump out of the bathtub if Mommy isn’t holding me, I feel much better when it is over – I run around like a crazy dog because all that dust and dirt is gone! Lauren has cut my nails because my nails are black and it is hard to see how short to cut them. Dad tries, but sometimes cuts them too short. Lauren is better than Dad at cutting my nails and I trust her not to cut them too short or they will bleed and I won’t want my nails cut at all the next time!

Shane: I don’t mind baths and I like to shake and get Mommy all wet!! Because I am a blonde lab, I have ears that fold over and I need them cleaned our regularly or I may get an infection. Mommy does this for me and then Lauren or Kristina look at my ears too since they have more experience than Mom looking at the inside of the ear. I like both Lauren and Kristina. They are really nice to me and sometimes I get a scarf and some cologne! Nothing like a good bath to make me want to jump around and show everyone how clean I am. Thank you Lauren and Kristina!!

Riley: Hey Shane, what does the word “coupon” mean?

Shane:  Well… a “coupon” is “a portion of a certificate, ticket, label, advertisement, or the like, set off from the main body by dotted lines or the like to emphasize its separability, entitling the holder to something, as a gift or discount, or for use as an order blank, a contest entry form, etc.” [Dictionary.com, January 19, 2012]

Riley: You read that from somewhere – I could have done that… but what does it mean?

Shane: I think you pay less for something if you have one.  Does it look like this?  {coupon}

Riley: How did you do that? Yes, it looks just like that! Oh, and it expires March 1, 2011, so people don’t have much more time to use the coupon!

Shane: Not bad for a blonde lab, huh?

Riley: I’m impressed! Let’s go show Dad and Mom!

Riley: well it looks like the Shopping Day was a success! We had 12 dogs come and stay with us!

Shane: Wow! And now here we are into the holidays already. Do you remember all of the food and presents from last year?

Riley: Yes, but Mom said it will be different this year. We will be staying with some of the dogs whose Mom and/or Dad has to go away and can’t take them.

Shane: Oh boy! That means we can play and have fun inside and if it’s not too cold, we can run around outside!

Riley: That’s right. And Mom signed up to be there on Christmas with the dogs bringing treats just like Santa!

Shane: What about New Year’s?

Riley: Well, Shane, you and I and Mom and Dad will be there New Year’s Eve all night just in case there are fireworks or other loud noises. Some dogs get very afraid of noises and we will all be there to help make the New Year one that is fun rather than have them be in crates or pens somewhere else. But after midnight, I know I will be tired and will want to go to bed!

Shane: Me too. Well, I can’t wait for Christmas and New Year’s so we can spend time with our friends!

Riley: We have a lot of practice to do between now and then sniffing out where our presents are and practicing ripping the paper off! So we have to go. Say Good bye Shane and wish everyone Happy Holidays!
